Rumour About Baby Names

Posted September 23rd 2007 @ 10:28 am by Adino

I heard a rumour from somebody about the Malaysian Birth Registration Department. I forgot who told me this before, but my brain suddenly brought this to my rememberance.

Allow me to first explain for the benefit of those of you not familiar with the process. Every baby born in Malaysia has to be registered. A birth certificate will be issued for the baby, naming the time and place of birth, as well as naming both parents.

If I’m not wrong, the baby is also issued a unique ID number and holds a children’s version of the identity card.

The rumour is that some parents who have submitted their children’s names for registration have been rejected, because they have chosen colour names.

This means names like Amber, Bianca, Candida, Ebony, Cyan, Azure, Hazel, Ruby, Sandy, Violet, Cerice, Lily, Ivy and Rose would be banned in Malaysia.

Does anyone have any information to confirm or disprove this rumour?

I remember while back the NST report quoting some names e.g; Amber Chia would no longer be allowed due to some reason about chinese characters. I remember the report, thought it din specify all names that would be disallowed.

Adino: Yeah, that one I know about. All Chinese names have to be spelled according to the Han Yu Pinyin standard. But colour names? Btw welcome to my blog and thanks for commenting! :)

Yes. Your info is correct, regarding colour.
All ‘coloured’ name will be disallowed.

But no, I don’t think chinese name have to be spelled accroding to pinyin.
That is a ‘trend’ rather than a requirement.

Oh, and name such as ah ju, ah gou also disallowed.

Adino: Thanks for the clarification. Was this in the news? Sorry, I don’t read newspapers.
