Proudest Memories

Posted November 14th 2007 @ 8:28 am by Adino

Pride is an important characteristic for every human being. Pride is a feeling that you are worth something, and it is the feeling you get when you achieve something you wanted to do.

In our Asian society being too proud is frowned upon. Ours is a culture of playing down our achievements to conform to the rest. It is considered bad manners to boast of something you have done.

This is why most of us would shy away from saying we are proud of something.

But then, some things are worth being proud of. It is good to remember some of the things we have done, to spur us on to greater things in the future.

I was thinking about this topic because the Giddy Tigress asked me to name ONE proud moment in my life.

I don’t have much to be proud about. My school days were a blur of bad memories. My college days were wasted on computer games.

But I am proud when I first heard how my programs makes the lives of my users easier.

I am proud that I got my master’s degree.

I am proud that my CEO remembers my name.

Most of all, I’m proud that I found Poey Chin, the most wonderful woman in the world to be my wife.

1. Ehon’s proudest moment is when he swept 5 out of 6 trophies at a State First Aid Competition.
2. Giddy Tiger’s proudest moment is when she brought Ethan boy into the world.
3. Adino’s proudest moment is when he married the most wonderful woman.

Adino: I agree, but cannot be too proud. Else people will call me ‘action’

Pride is something that Asians are not used to, but in other cultures it’s a natural (and good) thing usually. Sometimes I get proud (though I don’t show it) when I do something extraordinary, managed to finally play that difficult song on the piano, or just made a program (useless or not, as long as it’s bug-free) or something on the computer.

Adino: I think it’s just that our parents teach us not to be too proud of what we have done. Sometimes they will say that others are better just to be polite.
