Baby Newby

Posted August 22nd 2007 @ 8:28 am by Adino

I have to confess to everyone that I’m a baby newbie.

Photo By: Erik “P.Zado” Araujo (not my actual nephew)

Yesterday I was carrying my cute handsome nephew E, and I put him on my lap. At first he was interested playing with his toy, then after a while I didn’t know what to do.

After a few minutes he started to look at me, then cry a bit.

Then I started to panic. Sweat start pouring down my forehead.

I bounced him a little bit, asked him “what you want hmmm?” and made funny faces but his cries got louder.

My brother in law looked at me and said, “talk to him la”.

I smiled and scratched baby’s tummy like a puppy.

Then I signaled Poey Chin to come and rescue me.

Sigh…

I’m a baby dummy.

Can anyone give me any tips?

P/S: Things are really busy these few days so I might not be able to reply to comments immediately. But please do leave your tips and suggestions. I’m desperate to be a good uncle.

Ok, I’m going to go in a totally different direction here. Whether or not you speak “baby talk”, babies just want to communicate in a way that’s fun, relaxed, and engaging (kinda like bloggers ;) .

Just talk to him. It doesn’t need to be goo-goo’s and ga’s ga’s…it can be about anything — from the colors on your shirt to all the little fingers on his hands. Just talk to him in a way that’s soothing and fun and happy and you’ll be well on your way to being his favorite uncle.

If in doubt, call Poey Chin!!

P.S. — Here’s a post idea for you: “How to Get Readers to Comment on Your Blog…Tip #1 Post Photo of adorable baby nephew” :)

Adino: Ohh… so you’re saying that it doesn’t matter what I say… as long as I talk in a soothing tone it doesn’t matter what I say. Kind of like talking to my puppy hehe. Good idea on the baby nephew :) But his photos are copyright of my bro in law hehe

I think its very nice of you to think of this situation as an important thing. I don’t know if it’s the first time you see your nephew or you don’t see him often.
I have a niece she is used to me but every time I see her for a while she acts as if she is seeing me for the first time and remains distan for at least an hour then she changes as if she has just remembered me :P
my point is no matter what you do your nephew may not react nicely but thats ok after a while he will get used to you and will begin smiling trust me ;)

    Adino: Okay, thanks :)

    I agree with bengbeng
    The hold is very important
Once they get the right feel, they feel relax

Adino: Hmm… I need to go and practice this. Maybe will go and hold my Shih Tzu see got any response or not.

do what your father always did, hide sweeets in his pocket. and it has to be that plum tasting ones too. especially after banana indian rice.

Adino: Ohh yeah, sweets. Btw do you know that I live quite near the banana leaf shop we used to go to as kids? I go there about twice a month. And after that I always buy some sweets like my dad did hehe… Next time you come back I bring you there.

Mmmm…banana indian rice. Never tried it, but sounds yummy!

Anyway, yeah Adino, puppies and babies have a lot in common! They like a soothing happy tone…and they’re really good at knowing when you’re freaked out or stressed!

And they both love tasty treats, lol.

Adino: Actually it’s rice served with Indian curries and dishes, served on a banana tree leaf. Very yummy, and they provide unlimited refills!

I can’t start talking to my nephew like I talk to my doggy… my brother in law might not like that :)

hahahaha, yah, and when i go with u, don’t be suprised if u see my hand in your pocket (poey chin, the gay meter isn’t true, and i’m not as ‘gay’ as adino, so don’t look funny when u see my hand in adino’s pocket). sigh, old habits die hard man. all those sweets, made me more hyper after that then always kena rotan coz of u.

Adino: Sorry about the rotan hehe… hope you’re not too traumatised

First off all, thanks for crediting the picture!
Ah, this is my real nephew hahaha How lucky I am!

Kids are very funny… some are really a pain in the _ss but other are kind.
I had this same situation, and started to pay attention in some signals. Kids are always needing some to drink, to eat and always get bored too…

So the wiser thing to do is just SHOUT FOR IT’S MAMA to Help! hahaha

Adino: Wow, your nephew is really cute. You took a very nice photograph! Hehehe… sometimes I have to shout for its mama’s help too :)

Talk to them and try to make them laugh by making funny faces and by creating funny sounds. Tickeling them will also help you to make them laugh. Above all, give them what they need to win their confidence.

Adino: Welcome to my blog, and thanks for the tips!
