Yesterday night Poey Chin’s CG members and church friends organized a party for her at our condo. I was forbidden to attend the party, so after work I went to Mid Valley to grab some dinner and do some shopping. I had a delicious meal of KFC Snack Plate, Hot and Spicy. I was enjoying my meal, wondering why the queue was so short at the counter when I suddenly remembered the bird flu cases found in Sungai Buloh.
Anyway, after dinner I went along to MPH bookstore to get some books to read during my coming holiday. I browsed around and got the books I wanted, then I went to pick up a copy of CLEO magazine for Poey Chin.
As I was making my way to the check-out counter, I came across a young teenage couple browsing through a book. “They look so sweet together,” I thought. The girl was holding a book and reading to her boyfriend. As I approached them, the boy suddenly laughed out loud.
“Ha Ha Ha HA HA! Gracious! Ha Ha Ha HA HA!”
I slowed down to see what was so funny.
“It’s not ‘gracious’ la, it’s gracias, ” he said in a smug condescending tone to the girl. “You said gracious but it’s gracias, meaning thank you.”
I was thinking to myself that he’s a bit of a jerk. By now the girl had seen me around and she looked a bit embarrassed. I started to walk away, and then I heard the boy said…
“It’s French you know…”
Sigh… our Malaysian education system really boleh! *shake my head and walk away*
P/S: For those of you who haven’t got it, gracias is Spanish. In French, it would be merci.
