Recently Poey Chin and I observed the 5th anniversary of our wedding engagement.

I say observed because we did not celebrate or do anything special other than giving each other a hug and a kiss.

Then we went back to observing the kids.

I don’t know. I’m really bad at this. The first year we probably celebrated this special date (but honestly I can’t recall what we did). Now it’s the fifth year and I didn’t even buy flowers.

I guess I’m just a typical male.

Maybe by next year I won’t even remember the date anymore haha…

*cricket chirping*

Before Poey Chin thinks about asking me to sleep on the sofa, let me distract her with this photo!

Daryl: “Buji buji bear BEAR!”

I gave this bear to Poey Chin when I proposed.

One day we were at Lovely Lace and she said this bear was soooo cute.

A few days later I sneaked to the Lovely Lace store at the mall (which sounds like a lingerie shop but it’s NOT!!).

I walked in, approached the sales assistant and pointed at the bear, “I want that bear”.

She looked rather surprised and proceeded to take the longest time to pack the bear.

In the mean time, I was getting all sorts of allergies from the overpowering scents in the store.

In the end she rolled the bear into a ball and stuffed it in two large plastic bags, not managing to fit everything in the bag.

I walked out of the store holding this giant, red plastic bag. Everyone could see the bear’s hand sticking out.

I felt like a serial killer. Then I had to hide it in my car boot, hoping Poey Chin would not see it.

My plan was to use the bear as a distraction. I showed Poey Chin the bear, and she was so happy. All her attention was on the bear.

I went to get the flowers and engagement ring and knelt down behind her back, waiting for her to turn around.

The silly romantic things young people do.

Nowadays it has become Daryl’s “bear bear”. He drags it around by the head because it’s so big, and the head is starting to tear loose from the body.

Oh well.

I just want to end this blog post by saying how wonderful these years have been.

I had given up on love, deciding to live forever alone until Poey Chin came along.

She changed my life, made it better beyond my wildest expectations.

And it all started from the first words I heard from her lips, “I’m missing Klang seafood to meet your band…”

But that’s a story for another anniversary!

P/S: Poey Chin would never ask me to sleep on the sofa. I would enjoy that too much, watching TV till the late hours, and the luxury of sleeping without any of the kids disturbing me.

P/P/S: I want to highlight another anniversary. This blog is almost 5 years old! You can jump back and start reading my very first blog post about our engagement.

Today is our fourth wedding anniversary. I am amazed time has gone by so quickly.

I’m not even sure how we’re going to celebrate. I’ve been planning to take her for a nice meal but she is not too keen to have the kids tag along.

Here are four things I want to highlight about our four years of marriage.

1. Amazing Mother and Wife

I’ve discovered Poey Chin to be the most amazing mother to our kids. I don’t know where she finds the strength, but she does. The kids will always look for her when they get hurt or are unwell.

She has the biggest influence on Rachel, who now walks and sounds like her.

In these four years of marriage, I’ve seen her pregnant more than I’ve seen her non-pregnant. Pregnancy is really uncomfortable and tough, and she never blames me.

She will make sure I have breakfast and dinner waiting for me. She takes good care of the house. All this so I will have one less thing to worry about when I need to work.

She does all the little things to show me she cares, like packing my snacks or making me a cup of tea. Sometimes I never show her my appreciation and sometimes I take it for granted, and I hope to change that.

She is someone I can talk to about my frustrations and worries.

When I watch her give birth, I see how much pain and discomfort it involves. She never complains, and she will not be afraid of pain if it means doing the necessary.

In situations like that, she is braver and stronger than me.

She also puts up with all my weird and funny things. She calls me the funny husband. I’ve gone through things like losing weight, cost cutting and recently vegetarianism.

2. Cracks and Mends

We’ve had our share of arguments. After the perfect honeymoon period, the inevitable cracks started to appear in our relationship.

I’ve done and said things I regret, and she has forgiven me.

As more kids come into the picture, it is harder for us to have time together. The only time we get to talk are after the kids go to bed, and even then we are so tired we go to sleep with the kids.

So there has been ups and downs in our marriage.

3. The Children

I cannot find many memories of me and Poey Chin together as husband and wife. It seems to be cut short by the arrival of our children.

First we had Rachel and our life was turned upside down. All our priorities shifted inward. Just as we were settling down, Daryl came and he changed our family again.

Things were really tough last year, when Rachel was going through her terrible twos and Daryl needing attention. I tell you I almost went mad (like the cuckoo kind). It was such a bad experience I shudder to think of Daryl going through the same stage.

I suppose you parents with teenagers will tell me there’s more to come haha.

But then there are times when the kids make us so happy. Those times when they would love us, or communicate with us, or do something cute or funny. Those moments of learning, of increased independence and growth always make us feel very fortunate to have been blessed with children.

I really believe imitation is the best form of flattery, because I feel the same when my kids imitate something I do (it’s usually something silly).

Our four years marriage has been focused a lot on our children, and I suppose this will continue for the rest of our lives.

4. Changes

In a way I can still tell you I’ve never settled down after I got married.

There were always new changes and new situations to deal with.

I am constantly distressed we don’t have a proper and fixed way of doing things. Every few months something will come along (like a new baby) and force us to change.

In Summary

In the past few months I started wearing my wedding ring again even though I was afraid to do so after I lost it. I don’t know why but I feel Poey Chin is always with me when I see or feel the ring.

This four years I feel very fortunate to have found such a perfect woman to be my wife. She is all I ever need.

Outdoor wedding ideas are often discussed while making wedding plans. Having your wedding outdoors can make your wedding an unforgettable experience for you as a couple and your guests.

Many engaged couples making wedding plans would give some thought to outdoor wedding ideas, because an outdoor wedding can be so romantic and beautiful.

My sister will be getting married in October, so I was inspired to write a wedding related blog post today.

In this post, I have brainstormed and compiled a list of 50 outdoors wedding ideas. Some of these ideas are from movies I’ve seen. Feel free to mix and match them for your wedding. I have loosely grouped the outdoor wedding ideas by themes.

Outdoor weddings are wonderful because they are scenic, special, and romantic.

In some cases, you don’t even have to pay for the outdoor wedding venue. You can even save a little on decorations because nature has provided a beautiful setting for your wedding.

Outdoor weddings can also be more informal. They are perfect if you want a fun or contemporary wedding.

There are some drawbacks that could cause you to abandon any outdoor wedding ideas. First there’s the weather. I’ve been to an outdoor wedding where the sky looked like it was going to rain. I’ve been to another where it actually rained!

It really depends on your local climate and weather patterns. Some countries have hot scorching weather, and some have freezing snow.

Brides might have a problem keeping their hair looking perfect in the wind, or have problem wearing high heeled shoes outdoors.

I think that you can overcome any of these problems with proper planning and creative ideas. On to the list of outdoor wedding ideas:

Outdoor Wedding Ideas For the Sea

1. Wedding on the beach. Bride and groom make their vows standing in the gentle waves as flower petals are floating on the water.

2. Hawaiian sunset themed wedding on the beach. After the ceremony, wedding reception guests can enjoy the cool sea breeze and feast on Hawaiian food.

3. Wedding on a cliff overlooking the sea. A gazebo is setup for the bride and groom. The view will be amazing.

4. Pirates of the Caribbean themed wedding.

5. Wedding on board a cruise ship. This will be better if the cruise ship’s route takes you past beautiful scenes on the sea or river side.

6. Hire a private yacht for your guests and hold the wedding on the deck.

7. Wedding on a secluded island. This will be great if you are a celebrity and/or want privacy.

8. Jamaican themed wedding with your wedding band playing reggae and island music.

9. Romantic sunset wedding underneath a stand of palm trees on the beach.

10. Beach Boys wedding theme with a lot of beach music and classic rock ballads.

11. Underwater wedding. Bride and groom put on scuba gear and make their vows under the sea.

Exotic Outdoor Wedding Ideas

12. Wedding in a rice field / wheat field. In the evening, these fields will be a beautiful golden color.

13. Wedding beside a beautiful waterfall, in the middle of a tropical rain forest.

14. Fruit orchard wedding. The fragrance of fruit will enhance all the love that is in the air. Word of advice: avoid durian orchards.

15. Vineyard wedding. Hold your wedding in a beautiful vineyard, and serve a nice selection of wines produced in that local area.

16. Village / community / street wedding. Close off a section of road or your town (with permission from authorities) and hold a wedding feast in the midst of your local community.

17. If you live in the northern countries, you can make your vows under the aurora borealis night sky.

18. Wedding in a farm house setting, with livestock in the background. The wedding reception menu can feature food that is produced right there at the farm.

Historical or Cultural Outdoor Wedding Ideas

19. Malay wedding. Bride and groom dress in traditional Malay costumes, and Malay food is served to guests.

20. Victorian themed wedding. Bride and groom dress in Victorian era designs, and the wedding will have lots of lace, little teacups and elaborate floral arrangements.

21. Medieval theme. Brides can dress as a princess and grooms can choose to be either a prince or a knight. The bride can arrive seated on a horse, and later the bride and groom can ride off together.

22. Arabian themed wedding.

23. Scottish theme weddings. The groom and his best men wear kilts. Even better if you can book your wedding venue on the grounds of a castle.

24. Thai or Indian theme. Bride and groom arrive on an elephant.

Unusual Outdoor Wedding Ideas

25. Wedding in space. Take a flight on board the Virgin Galactic space craft and exchange your vows at the edge of earth’s atmosphere.

26. Cave men wedding theme. Think Flintstones, or tribal themes. Lots of beating drums. Meat roasting in a fire pit.

27. Fear Factor themed wedding. The bride and groom eat yucky bugs to prove their love to each other.

28. Bride and groom exchange vows while skydiving. Guests assemble at the landing zone and applaud as the just-married couple touchdown in their parachutes.

29. Mountain top wedding. The couple can exchange vows standing on the top of a mountain.

30. Lord of the Rings Theme wedding. Guests dress as elves, dwarves, kings.

31. Chess theme wedding. Bride and groom can dress as king and queen chess pieces. Decorations will be in black and white. The priest will obviously dress as the bishop.

32. Hire a drive thru movie lot for a day. Guests sit in their cars, watch the wedding take place on a large screen, while being served by waiters on roller skates.

33. Have a wedding during the eclipse of the sun. I’m not sure if some consider this a bad omen though.

34. Schedule your wedding to coincide with a meteor shower.

35. Harley Davidson or biker theme wedding. Lots of loud bikes, leather and tattoos!

36. Join a mass wedding at a stadium or temple. Up to hundreds of couples get married at a single event on special dates such as 10/10/10 or 01/11/10.

37. Antique cars theme. Bride and groom arrive in classic cars.

38. If your home is big enough, have a wedding on your lawn or back yard.

39. Pets wedding. Most indoor wedding venues don’t allow pets. Have an outdoor wedding and involve your pets in the occasion.

40. Amazing Race wedding. Leave clues for the groom and his best men to find where the bride is hiding. At each checkpoint, he and his men must perform tasks to prove his love, valor and courage.

41. Charter a private jet and have your wedding ceremony 10,000 feet above the ground.

42. Star Wars theme wedding.

43. Glee theme wedding. The wedding could have a high school theme. There will be singing, lots of singing. As an alternative, you could use a Grease theme.

44. Green wedding. Wedding makes use of recycled products for decoration. Food for wedding reception is sourced from local farmers.

45. Wedding at the place you met. It could be a park or your university.

46. Have your wedding at a theme park. If you can afford it, exchange your vows at Disneyland!

Hotels or Restaurant Outdoor Wedding Ideas

47. Pool side wedding. Guests can come dressed in beach wear, and your wedding reception can turn into a pool side party.

48. Garden wedding. Choose a hotel with beautifully landscaped grounds for your wedding.

49. Al fresco wedding. Find a restaurant beside a scenic location like a lake, get them to set up tables outdoors and have a wedding under the starry night sky. Arrange a fireworks display to end the evening.

50. Garden wedding with color themes. The color combinations you can select are limitless. You could also choose color themes by season (spring, summer, fall).

It was the happiest day of my life. There were smiles on everyone’s faces, and it was a wonderful time of celebrating our love and reunion with family members and friends.

Our parents lit a candle to signify their love

We then used those candles to light our own candle, signifying a new life together.

Exchanging rings

We had to do this in slow motion to allow the photographers to capture the moment. I love you darling.

The kiss.

The mock signing ceremony (we’ve already signed our marriage cert three days before)

My speech (probably will write about this in another post). I thanked her family for taking care of her, and sharing why I love her. I also reminded everyone that God is preparing a wedding banquet for us (His bride and church), and encouraged everyone to make sure we meet again in that banquet in heaven.

That’s it! I’ll share photos from the wedding dinner in another post.

Today is the second month anniversary of my marriage to a wonderful, sweet, lovely, beautiful, great-cook, talented and patient woman.

Happy 2nd month anniversary darling.

As I was thinking about my marriage on the way to work, I discovered that the second month was completely different from the first month.

The first month was a month of:

1. Discovery. Discovering each other’s habits and traditions was surprising, delighting and frustrating at times.
2. Changes. We both had to adjust to living with each other, which meant a lot of change in our daily routines.
3. Fights. A lot of quarrels over small things. I hit my wife for the first time.
4. New stuff. My bank account balance continued it’s countdown as we purchased essential items like an oven, a book shelf, new cooking utensils.
5. New experiences. Adjusting to a new church is not easy, especially one as huge as DUMC. My first time going to buy condoms (should I tell that story?), and doing some adult stuff.
6. New responsibilities. Now that I’m not staying with my parents, I have to do a lot of things on my own

In summary, the first month was very challenging and quite stressful.

In the second month, we both felt more comfortable:

1. We have adjusted to our new daily routines. Meal times and sleeping times more constant (this is important for me!).
2. Less fights as we have resolved most of the small small issues bugging us, like where to put our towels.
3. We went through our first serious moment as a married couple when we thought she was expecting.
4. Growing closer in our spiritual walk together
5. Able to support each other better. This month was full of drama, and we learned to support each other through it.

My wife is very wonderful. I love her very much.

So, for all of you readers who are married. What can I expect in the coming months? Anything to watch out for? Any warnings? Tips?

I finally got back my photos! Here’s some photos when I went with my heng tai (best buddies) to pick up my wife from her brother’s condo.

The car is coming, and horns are blaring. <strike>Nosy</strike> Caring neighbours are looking out their units to see what’s going on!

Time for Keith my nephew to open the car door.

Poey Chin’s zhi muis (best buddies) waiting for us. We were late due to a lorry breakdown on the LDP.

Four guys versus ten girls. A bit unfair but we didn’t mind hehe.

We can make this the album cover for my band Painted Picture… if we ever get around to recording. But then… don’t want la. I look a bit like pastor, but in fact the three of them are studying to be full time pastors now.
Our punishment for being late was to arrange the shoes outside the condo. Donny had the idea of arranging it in the shape of a heart.

Her zhi muis provided us some breakfast. First, super concentrated black coffee.

I’m not sure if there was sugar in it, because Lionel drank it all. He ended up being hyper the whole day.

Next we were served some kuih (local Malaysian pastries) modified with a generous helping of ginger, chili sauce, ketchup and some soya sauce.

A jam muffin laced with wasabi. I actually enjoyed this one because I was having a cold and it cleared my sinus system.

They then gave us a cup of apple cider to drink, which happens to be Leon’s favourite since he likes sour stuff.

Mom in law gave me a cup of bird’s nest to drink. Tasted so sweet.

Yes, we made it in the door!

Second stage: Write a poem for Poey Chin, and sing it to her.

The door is open (despite our horrible singing)! Before opening the door I had to call Poey Chin really loud. I called her “BAO BEI!!” (baby). So shy la hehe…

Presenting the poem written with blood, sweat and tears. Okay, maybe there was no blood.

Presenting her bridal bouquet…

My heng tais crying because they are losing a buddy.

Poey Chin pinning the corsage on me. It was quite difficult with her lacy gloves so her friend Sook Fong helped her to do it for me.

Finally, we are united. See how relieved I am? See how happy Poey Chin is?

Before the wedding, I was so stressed about what was happening in the morning. I am thankful that Poey Chin’s friends and zhi muis didn’t give us a hard time.

I feel so exhausted just reviewing the photos. I’ll write about the tea ceremony another day.

The number one question people ask me nowadays (I like it when people ask me this question, because it means they care ! ) is “How is married life?”. I always smile and give my answer in one word. “Different”. Different because life can never be the same again.

It’s hard to describe how it is like in a few sentences. Come on la, it takes an entire blog post for me to talk about it. One of the reasons I’m writing this post is to be a reference for others. Next time someone asks me, I will just say “Please go to the permalink…”.

I have been happily married for more than a month now. I enjoy every single moment we spend together. However my life has changed since my bachelor days. Pastor warned me about this in marriage counselling, and I’m beginning to see what he was talking about.

I’m not complaining, I’m just telling you soon-to-be-married guys what it’s going to be like.

Without any further ado, I present you my list of ways that married life is different from bachelor life. Hold on a second. I just want to record down my strongest protest against people who say “without further ado”, when they are actually furthering the “ado” by saying “without further ado”. Now…

1. Time

Since I have been married, there is no such things as time for myself anymore. I used to be able to spend hours exercising, practicing with my bass guitar, playing video games and surfing the Internet. Nowadays I spend each moment at home with my wife.

We do everything together, and any extra time I have is spent doing house work, helping to cook, washing dishes, tidying the house and watching TV with her.

I do occasionally retreat into my ‘cave’ by sitting at my computer for a few hours, or staying in the toilet playing Sudoku on my Pocket PC. Thank God my understanding wife lets me have my occasional private moments.

However I know I am crossing the limit when I turn on my PlayStation 2.

2. Church

The biggest change for me has to be church. I started attending my wife’s church at DUMC, and it’s totally different from what I am used to. At my previous church, everyone knows who I am and I can serve in the worship team every week.

In DUMC, there are thousands of people. There are probably a hundred bassists in that church. Furthermore, the way they do things is very different.

It’s a different culture and I’m still in shock. I’m like a little fish in a pond that has been thrown in the ocean. A kampong boy who is visiting New York for the first time.

A Shih Tzu puppy taking his first trembling steps out of his house. Luke Skywalker seeing Coruscant for the first time. You get my drift?

I plan to start visiting a cell group regularly to try and fit in better. Thank you dear wife for being so patient with me.

3. Habits

My wife and I have different habits. We are starting to realize that we do things differently due to our family backgrounds. One example is she likes to sleep early and wake up early. I like to sleep as late as possible and wake up as late as possible.

Imagine my shock when she would suddenly go into the bedroom and fall asleep, and I’m thinking “What? So early?” I don’t want her to sleep alone so I have to sleep early too. The next morning, she would wake up so early.

We both have had to learn how to accept each other’s habits. We’re still learning, discovering and adapting.

4. Social Life

I’m a very quiet and homely person, and I hardly socialize. My wife, however is a very social creature. I find it interesting that I am learning to open up more to her friends (and she has a lot of friends). As a bachelor, I would invite my friends over for dinner like once in two years (we normally go out instead).

In these few weeks we have been married, we have had three dinner parties. It’s nice to meet her friends. They’re really fun and outgoing people.

Now having said all this, I must remind you that I am not complaining. I am just saying it’s different. People ask my wife too how’s married life too.

Then they always follow up with “Are you satisfied?”. I’m happy to say that she always says yes with a big smile *proud*

Now it’s your turn to tell me. How has life been different for you since you got married?

It was bound to happen. I tried my best to prevent it from happening, but it happened anyway. I wasn’t even aware that I was going to do it. It just… happened. I don’t know how I’m going to sleep in the same bed with her again.

Now my wife is really going to write to Dear Thelma.

We were sleeping on our queen sized bed, her on the left side and me on the right side. It was in the early hours of the morning, and the sun hadn’t risen yet.

Now, I’m sure you realise that people have different sleeping styles. Some sleep like Superman (on their bellies with one hand extended), some sleep like a baby (curled to one side). There are those who sleep like Sleeping Beauty (serene, with hands clasped on their chest).

Some people sleep like Buddha (on their side, one hand resting under their head). Some people sleep like puppies (on their side, hands and legs extended).

My darling wife sleeps with a Zorro style (blanket covering her eyes like she’s hiding her real identity). I sleep with the inverted-Superman style (on my back, one hand extended and the other covering my eyes).

Don’t ask me why we don’t sleep all cuddled up like two bear cubs in winter. (It’s because I can’t afford to switch on the air cond every night). You can see how this sets up the disaster that is about to happen.

My wife was turning towards me, and I was putting right arm over my eyes. The next thing I knew, my right hand shaped like a fist (that’s how Superman flies right?) made contact with her left eye.

*WHACK!*

My wife straight away started sobbing like a baby (not real tears la) and I hugged her and apologised. She kept saying that I beat her. I was checking if she got a bruise or not, and comforting her. We ended up laughing about it.

So… married guys and girls, how do you keep from accidentally hitting your spouse in bed?

I went up to Poey Chin and gave her the bouquet of flowers. She then proceeded to pin a corsage on my jacket. My heng tais started to cry haha… because they were losing a heng tai.

We then proceeded to the living room where we had the tea ceremony. I had to call all her relatives in her Hokkien dialect.

After the tea ceremony, we walked out the door, and after three meters we turned back and returned to the house. Traditionally the bride had to return to her parents home three days after the wedding. The modern version is to just walk out and walk in again to symbolize the three days.

We took a lot more photos and then we made our way back to Kota Kemuning. When we arrived, my whole family was waiting for me. It felt weird because they were lined up on each side of my car porch looking at us and saying nothing. I just waved hello and smiled a lot.

We went into my parents house where we had the tea ceremony. Uncle John Foo started to play a few chords on the piano, setting an excellent sentimental atmosphere. Mummy nearly cried when I gave her the cup of tea. At that moment in time, all the love she has shown me flashed before my eyes. I nearly choked up when I said, “Mummy, yum cha”. All of my family was very wonderful giving us a lot of best wishes and advice.

*photos here*

At the end of the ceremony, Aunty Jenny placed Sushi in my arms. I was so happy that he was included in the ceremony, because he is like a brother to me.

We then proceeded to have lunch, as we rested for a while. After lunch we got in the car again and then drove over to Sheraton Subang.

At 7:30am Donny came into my room to wake me up, and let me know that it was time to get ready. I opened my eyes since I couldn’t really sleep. I went to wash up, and then went downstairs to have breakfast. I didn’t really have an appetite so I just ate a bit of noodles and then started to get busy with last minute preparations. The wedding car had already arrived and I went out to show Donny and Lionel how to put the teddy bears on the cars.

*photo of teddy bears should go here*

At 8:30am I went up to get dressed. After I was dressed, I went down and got ready to go fetch my bride. Before we left we took some photos and said a prayer for the day.

The entire morning I was feeling very nervous. Most of the stress had to do with what I feared the zhi muis were going to ask us to do. My hands were cold, my stomach was feeling heavy and I was anxious to meet Poey Chin. Donny noticed and calmed me down. I was also worried about all the plans we had for the day. Believe it or not, we had a schedule for the entire day down to the last minute.

We arrived at Poey Chin’s home 10 minutes late. There was a traffic jam at the LDP highway because a lorry broke down near Kelana Seafood. Guess how many heng tais I had? Three! I know, usually there should be much more.

At her door, we were punished for being late. We had to rearrange all the shoes outside the house. Then, we were treated to a lot of nasty modified food before we were allowed to enter. There was a super concentrated cup of coffee, modified kuih, modified muffins, and apple cider. My heng tais heroically took most of the food. Thankfully there wasn’t much else after that. My mother-in-law loved me so much she treated me to a special bowl of bird’s nest drink at the end. After giving ang pou to her zhi muis we were allowed to enter the house.

The final stage was trying to get into Poey Chin’s room. They made me write a love poem and sing it to her. I attempted to sing, but I don’t think any music came out of my mouth. Anyway, it was a great relief when they finally opened the door and let me in.

My wife was sitting on a chair with the biggest smile on her face. The smell of her perfume filled my nose as I stepped into the room. Her veil was gently caressed by the breeze from the fan, and she looked gorgeous in her wedding gown.

When we made eye contact, her eyes asked me “Are you ok?”.

My eyes replied “Yes”.

Her eyes asked, “What took you so long?”.

“Traffic jam la,” my left eye answered. “Lorry broke down.”. My right eye couldn’t say anything because sweat was going into the eye.

In this post I’m going to tell you all the juicy details of my bachelor party. Read on, my dear readers. There’s cleavage involved hehe…

On Friday night (June 15th 2007) I went home to Kota Kemuning. I had to spend the night there because the next morning I will leave my parent’s house to get my bride. I had to carry a lot of stuff down from my condo alone, into my car. Stuff like clothes, bags and my bride’s bouquet of flowers. I couldn’t stop sneezing because I was having a cold that day.

My band mates / heng tais / best friends and my sister Lydia organized a dinner at the Daily Meal Café in Kota Kemuning, so we went over after I had settled all my stuff. We had a nice time at dinner talking about old times and how things will be different in the future. Dinner was excellent even though I couldn’t really smell or taste anything.

Sorry to disappoint those of you who were expecting us to go to some strip club or something, but after dinner we went to church. We spent the rest of the night playing a fun card game called Super Munchkin. It is a game that is a parody of RPG card games such as Pokemon or Magic: The Gathering. You’re basically a superhero who gets superpowers depending on the card you draw. I got the cleavage stun power hehe…

At around 11:30 pm we ended the game and went home to my house. Donny (my best man) stayed over in my house too. I needed to rest because I was still sneezing, and Donny stayed up to handle some last minute preparations such as the ang paus. I went to bed at around 12am, and had a good few hours of sleep. I woke up thinking it was already six, but it turned out to be 3am.

I tried going back to sleep but there were too many things on my mind. I was so worried and stressed about what the bride’s zhi muis were going to do to me that I couldn’t really sleep. I also kept thinking about what to say in my speech. Actually, I was thinking about what I could say in the limited amount of time. I also started worrying about some wedding details that didn’t seem to be settled. In the end I decided to write all those thoughts down on a piece of paper so I could follow up on them the next morning.

At around 4am, I couldn’t sleep so I went downstairs to sit with Sushi my sweet Shih Tzu. At first he was surprised to see me come down, but when I sat on the floor, he came over to sit by my side. My heart was feeling sad, and heavy because I started thinking about the many memories I had in my parents home, and I miss being away from home.

Sensing that my heart was unhappy, Sushi looked at me, put his head on my lap and started to lick me. I started to sayang him and teardrops rolled down my cheeks as I started to reflect on God’s blessing in my life.

My parents got Sushi for me during a time when my heart was broken, and I was feeling very lonely. I believe that Sushi is a furry little angel sent by God to help heal my heart. Sushi brought so much joy and laughter with him into my home. I remembered those times when he was a puppy and I had to spent days training him to do all sorts of tricks. The dumb things he would do, and ohh… the cuteness! I remember him being at my side each time I felt hurt. He was there when I cried watching emo Cecilia Cheung movies. He was a good listener when I just wanted to say what was in my heart.

God also sent wonderful friends and church members into my life who helped me mend my heart, my faith and my outlook in life. When things didn’t seem like they could get any better, I met Poey Chin my bride, and I’m so happy now.

Before I went back upstairs I talked to Sushi, telling him to be a good boy. Don’t always scratch your eyes, don’t bark in the middle of the night, always listen to daddy and mummy.

I couldn’t sleep any more after that. I could only close my eyes and wait for the next morning.

Two weeks before our wedding, our photographer Joseph Siew invited us to the Curve to take some photos. My church DUMC frowns on couples taking wedding photos before their wedding day, because they are not married yet. As an alternative, some couples take dating photos instead, so there are some photos to show on the wedding dinner.

The Curve is a relatively new shopping mall in Damansara PJ. There are a lot of restaurants there, and it is near IKEA. We went on a Sunday morning to take photos. At first it felt kind of embarassing but then we started to enjoy ourselves. Joseph made all the shots look like we were overseas in Europe
