Work Related Question Today

I have a problem.

I have this intranet website that I just deployed.

The problem is, users from outside the branches can’t download images when they access the website over the WAN.

On their browser, the message “(1 item remaining) downloading picture lm.jpg” is displayed and the browser hangs.

Anyone encounter this issue before?

I checked Microsoft support and downloaded a patch for IE6, but still no difference.

I hate this part about my job. You face a problem and nothing seems to work. You have to spend hours and sometimes days to get to the root of the problem.

Worse of all, it’s not even a programming issue. It’s a browser and network issue.

Sigh…

Update 10:30am: I have found the root cause of the problem. My images were created by the artist department, who were using Macintosh Photoshop 7 to create the JPEG images.

It turns out the IE6 Service Pack 1 is unable to display JPEGs created using Mac Photoshop 7, due to the image headers being placed at the end of the file.

I solved the issue by screen-capturing the images and saving using MS Paint.

Who knew? Anyway I hope this helps some of you programmers out there.

  1. It’s so annoying. This compatibility problems between platforms and softwares is really annoying. I’m happy that you have found the problem in the end. As you said above, the smallest problem takes hours, sometimes days and so many ‘google’ing around to figure out.

    Adino: Yup, I agree.
