I Cancelled Astro

TV Static by Néstor Carrasco

Update September 2014: I wrote this post in 2011, and I’ve been without Astro for 3 years now. Recently I’ve upgraded to 8?Mbps?fiber optics Internet and bought a Samsung Smart TV so we get all our shows in 720p / 1080p?from the Internet. ?

I’ve finally done it.

I called up to cancel my Astro satellite TV subscription today.

The procedure is simple: just give them a call, give some information for verification and request to terminate your account.

They asked me, “what is the reason you are terminating your account sir?”

With a tinge of sadness in my heart, I replied, “financial reasons”.

We both kept quiet for a while. In my heart the words that left my lips seemed surreal, those were words I never had to say before in my life.

She stopped typing on her keyboard and waited for me to elaborate, but I didn’t.

See? I added a little bit of drama there in the past few sentences. A little story writing haha.

They require a 1 month notice in advance, which means I still have to pay another month subscription before my account is terminated.

Why I Did It

I’ve shared with you last year why I considered doing this. It’s not only for financial reasons. I guess you could take a look at that blog post if you haven’t read it before. (Funny how I chose similar images to illustrate both my posts!)

One thing I wanted to add was, we were only watching less than 20% of the shows on Astro. That means 80% of the time we’re flipping channels hoping to find something worth watching.

Without realizing, we could waste an entire day just sitting there and flipping channels. And many times we end up watching repeats of episodes we’ve seen before.

I realized the most effective use of our time was video on demand. Won’t it be nice to watch the shows we want, when we want?

Moving On

I bought one of these media players recently, which we will use to watch videos we download from YouTube or other Internet sources, effectively giving us video on demand!

KWorld M200

It’s a nice device that turns my TV into a media center. It plays a few video formats, music files, image files, text files and even has a SD card slot for viewing photos.

It comes with two USB ports for an external hard disk or thumb drive, and even has a LAN connection for streaming media from a network. I might get a WiFi adapter later so I can stream videos and music directly from my iMac.

It supports Full-HD but I don’t need that since my TV is still the old CRT type (remember when flat-screen TV was so state-of-the-art?).

It cost about RM220, I figure I will recover the cost of investment after 4 months.

I Think We’ll Survive

If it means spending less time watching TV, then it’s even better for our electric bill, and we lower our contribution to global warming.

Hopefully it means more time to do productive activities.

My parents, aunty and mother in law do come over during the day, and I’ve got some Chinese shows on my media center for them to watch too. As a last resort, they could bring over their Astro smart card and watch from my home (I hope that will work!)

If Rachel gets bored, I may get some cartoon DVDs for her. It should be too costly, since she can watch one DVD over and over again. For the past year I’ve got to know Barney, Baby Bop, and BJ very well.

I don’t even have access to the free channels because I can’t get any clear reception in my condo. Probably have to find a solution for that problem.

I hope things will work out.

  1. Hi, Adino,

Welcome to the world without Astro! ^.^

I believe you will get more benefits without having it. One of them is less temptation to spend money. 😛

O, get your girl the High School Musical! One of my former students started watching this DVD when she was 5 years old. Since then, she has been watching the same dvd zillion times.

I am amazed at how this show has turned her from a very shy girl to one who is more outgoing and loves singing and dancing.

    Vedis

Adino: Yeah I finally did it after one year delay! My daughter a bit too young for High School Musical… perhaps will let her watch some classic Disney cartoons first (cos the DVDs are probably cheaper).

  2. Wooooo I can’t believe it. You’ve finally made that move.
    Congrats yo! 🙂
    Bravo!

    As for me…arggh cannot lo.

Adino: Maybe if you can watch those Korean drama on Internet then no need Astro too hehe

  3. Well done! I recommend ciplak DVDs…they can squeeze like 10-15 dora or barney episodes into one DVD and can even get Chinese language 🙂

Adino: I saw those before, but I don’t think I’ll get any more Barney. Can’t stand him already haha.

  4. 1) Do not attempt to use Astro Smartcard on another decoder.
It will end up with the smarcard being banned

    2) As for 8TV and TV9 …
Get those aerial on your roof which comes with a remote (if your condo allow that)
Yes. Aerial with a remote, which you can control from your room. Press a button, and the aerial will start rotating, searching for the best direction

    3) With a kid, it is really hard to survive without Astro. I tried, but failed miserably

Adino: Thanks for the advice! I hope we can survive… should be easier cos my kids too young to really get addicted to any shows.

  5. My family cut off Astro about over 2 years ago. Haven’t missed it at all as I can get my movie/series fix online or elsewhere. Even my dad has not missed his weekly footie matches though my mom is no longer quite so up-to-date on HK serials. 😛

Adino: I guess you won’t really miss it, and I hope it frees up some time to do other things too.

  6. tough decision, huh?

i’m certain you’ll all get by, seeing that there are more pressing issues to handle.

we used to have the movie package but cancelled it because we weren’t watching the movies much. now, i don’t miss it at all. come to think of it, i hardly go to the movies as well.

Adino: I think so too 🙂

  7. Good on you for canceling Astro! I certainly found no shame in it at all. Why continue to pay for something which you hardly use anyway? Just like gym memberships 😛

As long as you have Internet access, the world’s your oyster, my friend 🙂

Adino: Yeah I agree everything is available with Internet access!

  8. Did they take back the decoder box and or dish?

Adino: No they didn’t. They just asked for the smart card.

  9. Great decision. In fact I’m going to cancel the Astro services. I will be calling them for the same today

Adino: Nowadays there are a few alternatives. TM and soon Maxis will offer TV subscriptions. Oh yeah, you can cancel but I think you still need to return the smart card at the Astro service centre.

  10. Hy its me shah i wana make at clear that how i hav to terminate my astro becz i m going bck to my country pakistan thats why i hav terminate at befor i leave malaysia bt what i hav to do first plz cn smeone gve me the best way to terminate at nw becz next mnth i hav to bck

Adino: The best way is to call Astro to cancel your subscription, then go to the nearest branch to return your smart card.

  11. hi do you need to pay any charges before they terminate your account?

Adino: No, you just need to settle outstanding bill, which may be pro-rated based on your cancellation date.

  12. Hi, did you gv back the sim card, decoder as well as the “piring” back after termination?

Adino: Hi! I returned the SIM card. I subscribed under “free decoder” package so no need to return. I stay in condo so didn’t have any “piring”.

  13. Its 2016 and im also switching off Astro subscription. My reason waste of Money in comparison with video on demand services such as Netflix (RM40 per month) or Iflix (RM 8 per month). Stuff off Youtube is free. Astro is obselete
