Daryls’ First Day at Kindergarten

Last Monday we brought my older son Daryl to his first day of kindergarten.

Driving there we could feel he was nervous. He was quieter than usual.

After we parked the car, we walked in to kindergarten where he was greeted by his teachers.

We told the teachers that Daryl is Rachel’s brother.

We brought him to his class room. Two girls and a boy were already there. They looked at him. He didn’t want to go in the class room.

I walked in the class and he followed. I showed him where he could sit.

He chose a corner furthest away from the other kids.

I showed him the wash room, and showed him around the class.

We showed him where Rachel’s class was. He met another boy from day care.

After five minutes we left the room. He seemed alright.

I waited outside the class without him knowing, then I peeked inside.

He was starting to be his cheeky self. Playing with a packet of tissue paper and chanting “Tissue, tissue”. The other kids were looking at him with curiosity.

We expect him to make friends easily.

Daryl is very sociable and we noticed kids naturally liked talking to him.

.

I realized that we didn’t really prepare him for kindergarten like how we prepared Rachel.

Maybe he’s our second child. So we parents are used to it.

Maybe it’s his personality. He seems more care-free, adaptable and sociable compared to Rachel.

.

That evening when he was home, we asked if he made any friends.

He said, “No, I will practice being quiet”.

I told him to ask his class mates about YouTube, Peppa Pig, Charlie and Lola, Ultraman, or Upin and Ipin.

Today I asked him again. He said they didn’t know what he was talking about. He also told me his class mates conversed in Mandarin most of the time.

Maybe that’s why he hasn’t made friends yet.

Argh, I hate it. I’m obsessed over things little like that. I don’t want him to feel lonely that’s all.

.

Today (his second day), they’re already starting to learn the strokes for writing in Chinese.

Initially we wanted to enroll him at another kindergarten (starts with Q). In the end we decided to go back to the same kindergarten.

Reason is, we wanted him to start kindergarten in Chinese language. The other kindergartens only taught Chinese as a subject.

We’ve seen how Rachel has transitioned to SJKC. We hope Daryl will have the same smooth transition when he goes to Standard 1 in SJKC.

.

I’m confident he will adjust soon.

We’re relieved there’s no crying or emotional meltdown from any of the kids.

.

Things in our home are a bit hectic because we need to adjust to a new routine.

I’m not getting enough sleep because I’m not used to waking up so early.

We just pray the kids will be safe.

  1. 2 kids in schools at the same time??

that’s a major change but you both will cope – all parents somehow do!!

all the best & enjoy it while the kids are still young!!

Adino: It’s hectic and tiring. Hope it’s all worth it.
